#1 Improvement – Plugin Configuration

Whenever we do talk about WordPress SEO then the most prominent name come in our mind is either WordPress SEO by Yoast or All-In-One SEO.

If you are already using All-In-One SEO then you may skip this step. However, using Yoast gives you some great features which is integrated along with Yoast. Configuring the SEO plugins that is being used was an essential part which can’t be considered to neglect. Perhaps, if you are new to it, I mean haven’t configured it yet then you could follow the sequences below that I have used and got great results.

As it’s a case study, the worst moment I do have faced (being new to WordPress) is implementing the SEO settings incorrectly which made my overall search engine performance low. However, I do approached Surendra Soni and perhaps did a great contribution in helping me in configuring it.

WARNING: If you are new to SEO, then it might be tricky for you to setup it correctly. A wrong configuration, can stop the search engine to crawl your site which ultimately led to rank drop.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Plugin Configuration

WordPress SEO by Yoast gives you a reliable way to optimize your blog’s SEO. Perhaps, as told before, it might be quite tricky for you IF you are new to SEO. So, let’s have a look at the features provided by Yoast.

1. Verifying Meta Tags of Alexa, Google, Bing, Pinterest, Yandex.
2. Title and Meta Settings.
3. Cleaning the <head> by hiding RSD Links, WLW Manifest Links, Shortlink for posts and RSS Links.
4. Configuring the Taxonomies, Homepage Tags, Author tags, etc.
5. Social Configuration i.e. Facebook Graph, Twitter Meta Cards, Google+ Authorship Meta Tags.
6. Generating Sitemap.
7. Cleaning Permalinks
8. Breadcrumbs Settings.
9. SEO Data Transfer (Import and Export).
10. Edit .htaccess files easily.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Titles & Meta Settings.

Perhaps, configuring the header section which indirectly means titles and meta tags are really essential to use and is an important part of WordPress SEO. Locate to SEO -> Titles & Metas, from the sidebar.

These are the options I found ideal to share and use. Although you may or may not use meta keyword tag option as because Google officially announced that they aren’t using keywords to determine a site’s ranking. Perhaps, I too haven’t cleaned those RSD links, etc from <head> as because 98% won’t be seeing your html codes rather than reading your articles and about those 2% they might be a coder or so, I don’t worry about that however giving more information to the crawlers will be having more benefit than hiding those.

Now, head towards Home to configure it. Here’s the screenshot of it.

Title Template allow you to input the desired title tag which you want to show in the Search Engine Results Page. Whereas the Meta Description allows you to show your desired meta description in the SERP results. I do recommend you having atleast 1 of your main keyword in the title tag and some too in the description tag which can enhance your performance.

Both in Post types and Taxonomies, I do have kept it default settings and haven’t made any changes over there. So, now let’s move forward to the next configuration.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Social Settings.

Yoast comes with the advance Social Networking Profiles settings such as Facebook Graphs, Twitter Cards, Google Authorship. Perhaps, I do have done some basics out of it like adding the page in Facebook. However you can also Front Page Image URL and Description to show in graph about your site (in Facebook), too you can add an image by default there in Facebook when you post it to show that image when any of your post doesn’t contain any image.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – XML Sitemap.

Although by being the most powerful SEO tool, Yoast is having some technical glitches in the XML sitemap and perhaps, I am yet using the Google XML Sitemap. Frankly speaking, while doing audit of my site I do found many issues with the XML sitemap and tried a lot to solve it but unfortunately it didn’t solved. However, you may find many reviews about using Yoast XML Sitemap or Google XML Sitemap. Perhaps, I do recommend you to use Google XML Sitemap for better performance.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Permalinks Settings.

The permalink of your blog/site plays an important role in your site performance – both inside and in the search engine. The permalink makes readers accessibility higher and better. However, WordPress comes with some default ugly looking numerical permalinks which needed to be changed. Perhaps, WordPress SEO by Yoast comes in your rescue. It offers you some great features to enhance your permalinks, I do have used 3-4 options to make my URL’s clean. Here’s the screenshot:

Screenshot taken 25/04/2014 of

I do have used “Remove Stop Words from Slugs” option as because you may have noticed that in some permalinks there are some stop words at the last (i.e., such like that, so to prevent it I have used it. Perhaps, the last option I do have redirected all the ugly URL’s and cleaned the permalinks (i.e. TO

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Internal Links Settings.

You may have noticed in some search terms (while searching in Google), you find some site’s permalink has a different navigation style like Website > Category > Sub Category > Post rather than having

Breadcrumbs are not only user and search engine friendly which makes your navigation smooth and better. Too it enhance your SERP performance. However, I do have just used the default settings here.

You can too use Google Rich Snippet Tool to analyze your the authorship and look at how your site looks in search engine.

WordPress SEO by Yoast – Robot.txt File.

Unlike the sitemap which tells to index the search engine bots, here Robot.txt used to restrict the bots not to allow to crawl certain privet areas of your site/blog. Such as WP-Admin, WP-Includes, etc. which can pass the information to hackers easily. So, in order to stay safe from it, Robot.txt file is used.

In the following sequence I do have used the robot.txt file to prevent certain areas of my site to be indexed in the search engines.  However, I do have kept the default options in the .htaccess file, so you may or may not change it. However, It won’t be any major problem in getting your site indexed so you may leave it.

However, you may read this useful guide by Harsh Agarwal of ShoutMeLoud on How To Create .htaccess File.

Tada! You are Done With Yoast Configuration.

#2 Improvement – Schema Implementation.

Suppose, if you have been told by a professional, or let’s take it as a blogger that without much efforts he/she has improved their SERP Impression tremendously. Might be that you give full attention to it ONLY. Isn’t it.

But, unfortunately do you actually think there’s something like that?

Yes, there is!

If you want to improve your search engine rank easily and yet to say quickly then Schema comes here for your rescue. Back in June,  2011, Google and Bing officially announced about Schema and perhaps at this stage it has been an essential part of SEO, or to say Advance SEO for quick performance.

I do have heard from many people, even me (I wasn’t using Schema few months ago) that Schema has no use and perhaps is a silly codes to implement and is waste. But It’s WRONG.

Thousands of E-Commercial sites, online marketers, even bloggers too use Schema to step at the first page of Google smoothly without much efforts. How? Just implemented schema, that’s all.

For instance, when we do a search on Google with keyword Moz Review, then you can see the following result.

Screenshot taken 25/04/2014 of

At the example above, you can clearly see (I hope so) that the first results having some Stars as a rating of the product having the reviewer name along with total score that has been rated. Perhaps, it’s ranking at the top (notice that).

Perhaps, to do so you require to implement Schema in your site (that’s easy). Visit Schema Official Site to know more.

Bonus to Improve SERP Impression

Perhaps, here come the case study to an end!

Bonus is yet to say!

People do spend thousands of bucks online and pay companies to boost their website’s SEO. But, its ultimately failing due to improper contents. Always remember one thing that is going to rocket your blog’s traffic. And it is:

Never neglect it. Write, keep writing and go on writing. That’s the way to success.

Howdy! You finally made it to the end! See you in the next article where I am going to share some more and more strategies.

So, have you found this article helpful? If yes, then let us know through a great comment.
