Surveying 100 people, 73 recommended Ahrefs to be the best platform for backlink analysis.
For if you’re into a serious game of SEO, it’s hugely important to keep a track into the happenings around with the competitors, their strategies, the changes made, and the outcome.
I received few mails from few of our active readers asking about “What’s the most proven method to spy competitors backlink data” and “What’s the way to make most use of it”.
Naming the person as “Y”, here’s what one of my reader mailed me regarded the question of link analysis –
You are doing really impressive. Recently started a micro niche site. Thanks to the article you have written previously. But am bit confused about how people grab the backlinks of their competitor.
Could you please elaborate it a bit?
Following up with the question, the sole purpose of this article is to make you understand about the conceptualization of how to get the backlink data of your competitors and how to use them to outrank your competitor.
In the SEO game, most probably what you may have noticed is the ups and downs in the results page, and the game-changer position is always the #1st position with those selective search queries, and you’re most probably no-where in the game if you’re stuck in the 2nd, 3rd page, and so on.
Thousands of dollar are being invested on link audits, reports, etc. while it’s rather easy to make audits of your site.
Here’s how –
Competitor’s Backlink Checker Tools
Upon testing several backlink analysis tool, here’s 5 of them –
1) Ahrefs: Backlink profile updates every 30 mins that’s really helpful to get live data. And considered as the best competitor backlink checker.
2) SEMRush: Shows competitor’s results, their main keywords along with volume of traffic and cpc.
3) Moz: Updates every 1 month, where DA (Domain Authority) is predicted as one of the ranking factor. However not suitable for regular analysis.
4) OpenSiteExplorer: Like Ahrefs, it shows pretty much fresh backlink data.
5) Majestic: TF (Trust Flow) often considered as a strong signal backlink profile, however not recommended for regular checks.
Since Ahrefs shows the live data of backlinks, and even I do personally make use of it to keep a track on the backlinks of my competitors (along with mine) so it’s highly recommended that you make use of it so that you be able to execute the tasks without hassles.
NOTE: If you’re in event blogging and not regular sites, Ahrefs still be really helpful for it helps you to check the exact backlinks of your competitors so you can easily be able to replicate the backlink profile of them to rank & bank.
So how to use it?
How to use Ahrefs to Check Competitor Backlinks?
1) Firstly, you require to register at Ahrefs.
NOTE: Despite you can register a free account, however IF you’re really seriously into your business you should invest few bucks for a Ahrefs Package. It’s HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to atleast invest on the LITE Plan that costs $79/monthly allowing you to export over 5000k rows monthly basis, allows to use other helpful tools like the site explorer (to help you understand about what’s wrong with your site’s SEO structure that would help you to optimize your site) and the keyword explorer and FULL BACKLINK DATA of your competitor.
For premium users, Ahrefs allows you to add your site and you can also be able to check all the On-page errors that’s really important to help you rank at top of Google.
Free Account only show a few backlinks & only 5 searches per day, so it’s recommended to ATLEAST invest few bucks on it to get access to unlimited data. Other plans (for more features) you can browse across the Registration Plans & Pricing page of Ahrefs.
Choosing Annual Plan gives you 20% discount on all plans.
2) Head towards “Site Explorer“, and enter your website address. For instance, I’d be using bodyweightoverload.com as an example for backlink analysis.
3) Next screen you can see many stats, where it shows the root domain (/) has 173 backlinks in total and 93 referring backlinks that is considered to be really well backlinking. Why? As the more referring backlinks (and backlinks of different IPs) you’re having more chances to outrank your competitors.
(Learn here, the super-proven backlinking method).
For it’s that, if you’re having 5000 backlinks from 10 referring domains (sites) it definitely sounds like spam to Google and initially penalize the sites and loss their ranking overnight. So it’s highly important that you take in consideration about this factor while backlinking.
Bonus tip: Anchor text variation + unique referring domains + proper on-page = #1st Page.
4) Drag to “Inbound Links” then to “Links”, and you could be able to check their backlink profile.
The result –
And, you’re done! Just it’s the method of how easily you can spy competitors backlink. Easy, and super fun outranking your competitors. Replicate the same method, and you’re ready to make some serious cash.

Apart from doing analysis of competitor’s backlink, Ahrefs allow you to make maximum use of it’s uncompetitive features with it’s paid plans (see here pricing).
Ahrefs Keyword Explorer:
The perfect tool to get LSI keywords is Ahrefs’s very own Keyword Explorer tool. As you’re already familiar with, that how much significant role do On-page optimization plays in term of Google Ranking Factor so making proper use of the tactic would allow you to rank at the first page of Google, easily.
Compared to Google AdWords, Ahrefs shows better insights. And since in term of CPC, US & UK has got huge potential so is Ahrefs providing you results on basis of that.
Here’s an example –
Ahrefs Content Explorer:
This is most probably the best tool I’ve used so-far, in term of generating massive content ideas — based on what’s trending in the industry. Ahrefs content explorer shows you what’s trended on web based on the search term you provided them.
It shows you – which content is more seen, how much backlinks (referrings) the post got, and how much social signals it has got. In all, if you are interested in writing most trended articles, this tool has got the grace.
See the content explorer tool in action-
Ahrefs Position Explorer:
This is indeed another great tool to spy on competitors, the Position Explorer tool allows you to look on the data of your competitor’s – how much organic traffic the site has, their competitors, the organic keywords, their top pages, and many more.
So what can be done is stealing their data, and replicating into your site — but, in a far better way. And you would see a massive growth in your site.
Here’s an example –
Wrapping it up:
It takes time to master over link building, you need to keep experimenting a lot, tackle the challenges by Google algorithms, face the Google dance, and many more. And most important, keep upgrading the tactics so you don’t be stuck with those old-school techniques that no longer comes in existence in term of SEO.
For if you believe, you can rank a site by spamming having 100 backlink with 100 referring with same anchor text, you ought not to rank anywhere. Complete failure.
Google is becoming smart day-by-day, taking in their accounts seriously about spamming & link building, despite SEO would not die, you need to give importance of learning the new tactics.
The competition becoming huge in the SEO industry, and if you don’t know how to deal with it, you’d be literally not able to survive the challenges.
